A.F.C. WEST 1st - Detroit Independents

Detroit started their schedule a bit tentatively with a 1 point win over South Beach, a tie with Oldsmar and a 4 point win over Canton. Then the Independents got on a serious roll streaking easily to four more convincing wins before being brought back down to earth losing a 1 point game to Lakewood. With a backfield of Abner Haynes and Nick Pietrosante it would be easy to assume that Detroit is just grinding down their opponents. In a twist it's actually been a very productive passing game, manned by Frank Tripucka, that has made this offense click. Tight End Bobby Walston has found a strong connection with Tripucka, pulling in 4 touchdown passes to date.

The Detroit defense might be the unsung heroes of Detroit's great start. They are only allowing just over 11 1/2 points per game through the first 8 games. With all the dynamic playmakers on defense it might be hard to single out one but certainly you can't ignore MLB Bill George.
George is leading the team in tackles and might be having the best season of all the league's MLB's thus far. With stout linebackers to his left and right in Paul Maguire and Walt Michaels they might be the best trio in the SRFL. Equally inpenetrable is the secondary. Cornerbacks Mark Johnston and Tom Brookshire consistently blanket the outside receivers while Andy Nelson hounds the tight ends. Free Safety Jimmy Patton roams the field providing assistance wherever needed. On the defensive line are the two team leaders in sacks Ed Khayat and Ray Collins. Looking at the schedule ahead there doesn't seem to be many obstacles that could prevent Detroit from capturing a playoff spot as the AFC West Champion. Detroit Independents Schedule Report
