AFC West Richmond Rebels - Canton Bulldogs News & Notes

Richmond had the third pick of the first round so they knew a great player would be available. The question was which great star and as fate would have it that's exactly what they got. Namely Bart Starr!

In the sixties the Green Bay Packers were dominant and their leader was Starr who quarterbacked the team through the sixties into the seventies. Providing the targets for Starr's tosses are Dave Kocourek, Jerry Reichow and Frank Gifford with Joe Morrison waiting in the wings.
With their second pick the Rebels got their defensive captain and secondary cornerstone Eddie Meador.

Named to his first Pro-Bowl in 1960 Meador would receive that honor 5 more times in his career. Richmond has two stong Defensive Ends bolstering their defense with Joe Robb and Bill Glass. These two might not have the notoriety of some other defenders but both men can impact a game defensively in multiple ways.
The Canton Bulldogs were another team with the good fortune to be able to grab a good young Quarterback and they didn't hesitate to draft Sonny Jurgensen.

Any time that you can begin a franchise with a Hall of Fame QB you can't go wrong. Then what a great couple of weapons to supplement Jurgensen in Raymond Berry and Paul Hornung. Anyone would be happy to have that triumvirate at their disposal. That's some serious offensive weaponry in Canton.
With that offense stacked it doesn't seem fair that the Bulldogs also have what some considered the alpha Middle Linebacker of the late 50's-early 60's Sam Huff.

In addition to Huff Canton has two great pieces in their secondary. Dick LeBeau has 3 Pro-Bowls in his future and that pales next to his teammate Yale Lary's 4 Pro-Bowls. Then you add special teams proficiency with Hornung's kicking skills and Lary's punting prowess. It's just not any fun to have to face Canton.
