NFC West Huntley Hawkeyes - Rich East Rockets News & Notes

With the fourth pick in the draft Huntley knew they were going to get a great player to start a team with. After Brown, Taylor & Starr went off the board Huntley raced to give their draft card to the Commissioner with the name of Johnny Unitas.

Johnny "U" could have easily been the first person taken in the draft as his resume at the prime position is unquestioned. Perhaps the premier passer of the time and a perennial All-Pro Unitas puts the fear factor into opponents.
With a blue chip quarterback secured where do you go next. The Hawkeyes answer was to grab an elite target at receiver and they took Art Powell. Powell would lead the AFL in receiving yards two times and is dangerous at all levels as a pass catcher. Not happy with just one big target for Unitas West Huntley took another game breaker in Lionel Taylor. Taylor will lead the AFL in receptions 5 times!. Well that should be enough for Unitas right? No sir. Enter Elbert Dubenion. "Golden Wheels" Dubenion provides yet another game breaking talent at Unitas' disposal. Add in running backs Willie Galimore and Clarence Peaks and it's a very hard challenge for any defense. The defense, while perhaps not as loaded as the offense, is also noteworthy. The Defensive Ends are tough with Andy Robustelli and Mel Branch. The scondary has the young outrageous Fred "The Hammer" Williamson and in the Middle Linebacker spot is Larry Grantham.

With this collection of talent on offense and defense the Huntley Hawkeyes seem poised for a some great seasons.
beeeeeee The Rich East Rockets were fortunate to have the number two pick of the draft. After Jim Brown went to St.Louis the Rockets determined that the man for Rich East was Jim Taylor.

Sixties football was a running era so it's understandable that Jim Taylor would be chosen next. Taylor is a workhorse who can consistently keep the chains moving, breaking tackles and wearing down a defense. With the first pick secured how would the Rockets proceed? The determination was made to focus on the offense. Rich East is flush with weapons on the "O". Next to Taylor is John Henry Johnson another runner who can bully a defense. At the Tight End spot is the dangerous Jim Gibbons. Then at receiver two great targets in Charley Hennigan and Sonny Randle.

The Rockets also have two talented passers in Quarterbacks Babe Parilli and Tom FLores. It doesn't seem fair for one team to have so much offense. The defense isn't as deep but still has some nice talent. Dave "Hog" Hanner is at Defensive Tackle. Johnny Sample is leading the secondary along with Jimmy Carr. Not a bad unit but in comparison to the dominant offense the defense will be focused on adding more down the road. Overall things look good for Rich East.
